What to expect from STL files

  • STL carries triangles and nothing else: no materials, no textures, no colours. The tool applies a neutral studio material so the shape reads.
  • STL declares no units, which does not matter here — the camera frames whatever it is given.
  • Faceting you see is genuinely in the mesh. STL stores flat triangles, and no smoothing is invented.
  • The result is a 2D animation of the model. It is not a converted 3D file.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the colour of the model in the GIF?

Not per-material, because an STL has no materials to colour. What you can change is the backdrop and the lighting environment, which is what makes a print read as metal, resin, or clay.

Does binary or ASCII STL matter?

No. Both load. Binary files are far smaller for the same mesh, so a large ASCII STL is worth re-exporting as binary before it reaches the size limit.

Is this a good way to show a print to a client?

Yes — a rotating loop shows overhangs and wall thickness that a single render hides, and it plays inline in an email or a chat without a viewer plugin.
