It is not decimation
Simplification removes triangles from the mesh you gave it. A rebuild wraps a new surface around it and discards the original topology, so the result is a different mesh that occupies the same space.
What it discards
Materials, textures and UVs cannot be carried onto a surface that shares no vertex with the original. Colours are re-sampled onto the new surface; fine detail and openings are closed over.
Three tightnesses
Loose, balanced and tight set how closely the new surface clings. Tighter follows the original more faithfully and costs more to compute, so the choice is presets rather than a raw number.
When it is the right call
- Distant geometry. Background props and repeated instances, where the silhouette is all anyone sees.
- Collision and occlusion. Meshes that are never rendered, where a closed surface is worth more than a faithful one.
- Broken input. Non-manifold edges, holes and loose triangles that stop a decimator working at all.
- Printing and simulation. Pipelines that need watertight input rather than a pretty one.
Alpha wrapping builds a new watertight surface around a model the decimator cannot process — holes, self-intersections, loose triangles. Its base cost is one processing credit like any other simplify job, multiplied by the source file's size band.
