What to expect from PLY files
- PLY usually carries per-vertex colours rather than materials, and those render directly.
- Point clouds without faces have no surface to shade and will not display.
- Scan meshes are often very dense. If the tab struggles, optimize the model first.
- The result is a 2D animation of the model. It is not a converted 3D file.
Frequently asked questions
My PLY shows nothing at all. Why?
It is probably a point cloud. A PLY with vertices but no faces has no surface to shade, and nothing is rendered. Reconstruct a mesh from it first — the scanning software that produced it usually can.
Will per-vertex colours from my scan survive?
Yes. Vertex colours are read and rendered directly, which is why a photogrammetry scan usually looks right here without any material at all.
The tab freezes on a large scan. What now?
Scan meshes routinely run to millions of triangles, which is more than a browser tab should hold. Simplify it first: a decimated copy previews instantly and still shows the same silhouette.
Where does my PLY file go?
To private storage only you can reach, so the workspace can open it — never anywhere public, and deleted after 24 hours unless you sign in. The animation itself is rendered and encoded by your own browser, which is why it uses no processing credits.
