Convert GLTF to PLY
Convert a single-file glTF into a PLY for scan-processing tools. Geometry and per-vertex colours carry across; materials, textures and UVs do not.
Free, no account, up to 50 MB per file. Uploads are private and deleted after 24 hours unless you sign in, which claims them and keeps them for 7 days.
What survives GLTF → PLY
- Geometry
- Per-vertex colours where the glTF declares them
What is not carried across
- Materials and textures — PLY cannot store them.
- UV coordinates.
About glTF files
- A .gltf is a JSON document that usually references external .bin buffers and image files.
- MeshCrunch accepts a single file, so a .gltf whose buffers live beside it cannot be resolved. Export it as .glb, which bundles everything into one file.
Why PLY
- Carries per-vertex colours, which most interchange formats drop.
- Widely read by photogrammetry and scan-processing tools.
Common problems
- The upload fails, or the converted model is empty.
- The .gltf references .bin buffers or images stored beside it, which a single upload cannot include. Export the model as .glb from your 3D application and convert that instead.
- The PLY has no colour.
- A glTF usually colours a model through materials and textures, which PLY cannot store. Only colours written per vertex are carried across.
After converting
Converting changes the container, not the geometry — a heavy model stays heavy. If the result is destined for the web or a game engine, reducing its triangle count is the part that makes it load faster.
